On the road with George Gallery
Mike Dyson takes to the road with a Garrett tractor that was delivered new just five months apart from his own example. So is it really true that 'every engine is different'?
The two water gauges are almost certainly part of the engine’s original equipment. The left hand one is slightly lower than the one on the right, thus giving a wide range of water levels.
The crankshaft is seen with the low-pressure eccentrics on the left, the balance weights and connecting rods, with the high-pressure eccentrics on the right.
Garrett tractors are fitted with bored crosshead guides. Above can be seen the regulator valve rod and beneath is the auxiliary starting valve rod.
As part of the extensive restoration, Lord George has been fitted with a new awning made from poplar and pitch pine.
It is 1955 in Goddard’s yard and Lord George has now been restored. In front stands a very young Kevin between his father George and his sister Kathleen.
The Garrett tractor is unlike other makes of tractor as it has a much larger flywheel, measuring 3ft 3in.
