Letters
Egyptian combo
19 January 2012
MR Peter Arnold will be pleased to know that the unusual UK-built loco and carriage combination illustrated in his letter in OG 263 still exists. I saw it in October 2010 in the Egyptian Railways Museum at Cairo’s main station.
The conversion debate rolls on and on
19 January 2012.
ALAN BARNES attempts to justify conversions by presenting the old chestnut that ‘the owner, having paid his money, has every right to treat the engine in whatever manner he thinks fit’ and that ‘a converted engine is surely better than an unconverted engine being cut for scrap’.
Railway carriages for Egypt
15 December 2011.
I HAVE some unanswered questions relating to some railway carriages made in Newcastle upon Tyne in the 19th century for use in Egypt.
Think before you scrap
15 December 2011.
COLIN TYSON made a fair point in his editorial in OG 262. As a collector and restorer of vintage stationary engines and lawnmowers for some 40 years, I’ve found I get better prices from the scrapman for some less popular items than from fellow collectors.
Childhood Supercar memories
17 November 2011.
WHEN I read the article about the Supercars display at the Hanbury Rally (OG 260) it brought back childhood memories.
In praise of the wheel
17 November 2011.
IN THE context of good design, no discerning judge of fine architecture would look twice or find any interest in the study of the front wheels of a traction engine.
Leyland Chivers van
20 October 2011.
THE ARTICLE on the Chivers Leyland in OG 257 was very interesting and more so to me as Alan Barnes mentioned Frank Harper.
Helping to identify those saved African engines
20 October 2011.
I HAVE just returned home from Great Dorset and have OG 257 to hand.
Australian Engines: Buyers and sellers
15 September 2011.
I READ Phil Thorn’s letter in OG 259 with some sympathy. There can be no justification for the illegal export of engines.
A ship with no heart
15 September 2011.
I READ the article on the restoration of the Nomadic (OG 259) with interest.
