Another Royal Navy steamerster

I WAS very interested to read the article on the National Navy Museum’s Steam Pinnace ‘No 199’ which has been beautifully restored to full working order (OG 246).

Another Royal Navy steamerster

Pinnace '236' in Navy Brittania Blue. NEIL CORNER

But it is not the only ex-naval steamboat in preservation as we are fortunate to own Pinnace ‘No 236’, which was also built by J Samuel White in 1892, as an Admirals Barge. It had been the Commander in Chief’s vessel for several years in Australia and was returned to Portsmouth on HMS Powerful (then one of the two largest ships in the Britiah Navy) and decommissioned at Portsmouth in 1912.

She was named Janet by Richard Lane Joynt and was eventually purchased by my friend Geoffrey St John who had her completely rebuilt by the Maritime Workshop in Gosport over three years.

The engine currently installed is also of J Samuel White, manufactured in 1891, one year older than the vessel, but we also have a spare J Samuel White compound engine of the correct size and specification. Janet is also on the National Historic Ships Register.
