In 1835, a Great Western Railway director commented that Isambard Kingdom Brunel should extend his ‘Billiard Table Railway’ onwards from Bristol to cross the Atlantic.
In an absorbing talk at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth, on November 30, David Pollard will reveal how this passing comment changed the design and construction of merchant ships forever.

Brunel ships: lecture at Maritime Museum, Falmouth.

Having already revolutionised rail travel, over the next 20 years, Brunel designed and built three ships which were years ahead of their time: Great Western, Great Britain and Great Eastern.

David says: “This is very much a non-technical talk aimed at anyone with an interest in maritime history. I’ll be reviewing the reasons for, construction and operation of Brunel’s three famous ships and their legacy, which is still very evident today.”

Tickets for the lecture, entitled Ships of Brunel, at 6.30pm on Wednesday, November 30, are available from the Maritime Museum in Falmouth at £8 for lecture only and £18 to include two-course buffet. Doors and bar open from 6pm. To book your seats please call 01326 214546.
