Think before you scrap

COLIN TYSON made a fair point in his editorial in OG 262. As a collector and restorer of vintage stationary engines and lawnmowers for some 40 years, I’ve found I get better prices from the scrapman for some less popular items than from fellow collectors.

For example, I got £50 for a 30in 1950s mower when I would only get around £30 at a vintage auction. Before scrapping machines, I remove magnetos and carburettors and other useful bits to keep my flock mowing!

Of course it would be stupid to send sought after items for scrap, even in the present market, so it’s up to us to think carefully before scrapping anything – after all, it’s an ill wind…
